What is a somatics class?
Somatics describes the teaching /learning approach of the class. In most traditional exercises the focus is placed on achieving targets - lifting heavier weights, being able to stretch further into a shape. In Somatic movements the attention is placed on the experience in the body : what is the means by which you are doing the thing you are doing ? eg where is the effort ? how much effort is being used ? where the body weight is being placed ? what is happening in the breathing ? are you fighting against yourself?
Once you can feel what you are doing you have capacity to make it more efficient and let go of tensions and habits which do not serve you.
