What is Qigong
Qigong loosely translates from Chinese to mean “Cultivation of Life Energy”. It is an umbrella term to encompass other martial art forms such as Tai Chi . Unlike some arts which have very precise sequences and forms Qigong is more exploratory and has gained many , many variations over time.
Qigong tends towards being a health and spiritual practice rather than a martial art , and is considered one of the pillars of Chinese Medicine along with acupuncture and herbal medicine.
Qi has been described as the energetic blueprint that gives life to all matter. It is the organising force of the body and unifies us with nature.
Qigong employs a blend of active and dynamic movements, breathing, visualisation and meditation techniques aimed at cultivating healthy Qi flow through the body’s organs and meridians.
In the West we are only recently acknowledging the mental health benefits which can be experienced from breathwork and meditation , working with gratitude practices and intention. All fundamental components of Qigong practice.
Physically a Qigong practice develops, balance , strength, coordination and mobility. We often consider Qigong and Tai Chi as practices for the elderly . The Shaolin Monks known for their immense strength and physical abilities use Qigong as their foundation practice to develop good stability and balanced foundations ( both mental and physical) on which to build their strength practices.
Qigong gathered increasing popularity during the pandemic, many people finding it beneficial to manage their anxiety and feel more connected with nature.
